What is a 2005-S West Virginia Quarter Proof worth?
Age alone gives this coin a small premium, even worn. Sharp details and original surfaces push it higher.
What would make yours worth more:
- Grade and, for proofs, strong cameo contrast
- A known variety for the date: 2005-P Kansas "In God We Rust" Quarter or 2005-P Minnesota Doubled Die Quarter

- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2005 50 State Quarter?
- On the obverse, to the right of Washington's ponytail (P, D or S). On this coin the mark is S, for San Francisco.

- 3,262,960.
What to check on your 2005-S
- Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2005-D (356 million made).
- Look for the 2005-P Kansas "In God We Rust" Quarter (it's on Philadelphia coins, not this one).
- Look for the 2005-P Minnesota Doubled Die Quarter (it's on Philadelphia coins, not this one).
- Judge the grade under good light. State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.
Proofs from 2005 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.
How to recognize it
The West Virginia design
The New River Gorge Bridge spans the reverse, its steel arch high above the river below, with the words NEW RIVER GORGE. Completed in 1977, the bridge is one of the longest single-span steel arch bridges in the world. The New River cuts a deep gorge popular for whitewater rafting and other outdoor recreation. West Virginia split from Virginia during the Civil War and became a state in 1863. Its coin closed out the five State quarters of 2005.
The 50 State Quarter design
To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.
