What is a 2005-S Minnesota Quarter Proof worth?
Age alone gives this coin a small premium, even worn. Sharp details and original surfaces push it higher.
What would make yours worth more:
- Grade and, for proofs, strong cameo contrast
- A known variety for the date: 2005-P Kansas "In God We Rust" Quarter or 2005-P Minnesota Doubled Die Quarter

- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2005 50 State Quarter?
- On the obverse, to the right of Washington's ponytail (P, D or S). On this coin the mark is S, for San Francisco.
- How many 2005-S Minnesota Quarter proofs were made?
- 3,262,960.
What to check on your 2005-S
- Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2005-P (240 million made).
- Look for the 2005-P Kansas "In God We Rust" Quarter (it's on Philadelphia coins, not this one).
- Look for the 2005-P Minnesota Doubled Die Quarter (it's on Philadelphia coins, not this one).
- Judge the grade under good light. State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.
Proofs from 2005 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.
How to recognize it
The Minnesota design
Two people fish from a small boat on a lake while a common loon swims nearby, with pine trees along the shore and a textured outline of the state behind them. The slogan LAND OF 10,000 LAKES appears on the design. Minnesota actually has more than 10,000 lakes, where fishing is a popular pastime and the loon, the state bird, nests in summer. Minnesota became the thirty-second state in 1858, the year shown on the coin. It was the second State quarter of 2005.
The 50 State Quarter design
To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.
