What to check on your 2005-S
- Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2005-P (316 million made).
- Look for the 2005-P Kansas "In God We Rust" Quarter (it's on Philadelphia coins, not this one).
- Look for the 2005-P Minnesota Doubled Die Quarter (it's on Philadelphia coins, not this one).
- Judge the grade under good light. State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.
Proofs from 2005 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.
How to recognize it
The Oregon design
Crater Lake fills this reverse, with Wizard Island rising from the water, conifers along the rim of the caldera and the words CRATER LAKE. Formed when the volcano Mount Mazama collapsed thousands of years ago, it is the deepest lake in the United States. Crater Lake National Park is the only national park in Oregon. The state was admitted in 1859, the year on the coin. Its quarter was the third release of 2005.
The 50 State Quarter design
To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.
