What to check on your 2000-S

  • Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2000-D (652 million made).
  • Judge the grade under good light. State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.

Proofs from 2000 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.

The story of the 2000-S Virginia

Elsewhere in US coinage in 2000

The golden Sacagawea dollar was introduced, made of manganese brass over copper.

How to recognize it

The Virginia design

Three sailing ships, the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery, cross the reverse under full sail. The inscriptions JAMESTOWN 1607-2007 and QUADRICENTENNIAL anticipate the 400th anniversary of the colony these vessels carried to Virginia in 1607. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in North America. Virginia ratified the Constitution in 1788, the year shown on the coin. Its quarter was the fifth and final State quarter released in 2000.

The 50 State Quarter design

To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.
