What is a 2000-D Massachusetts Quarter worth?

A worn 2000-D Massachusetts is a spender: face value. A bright uncirculated one, or one with a known error, is worth setting aside.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with full original luster
  • A die variety or minting error

What to check on your 2000-D

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2000-P (629 million made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2000-S Massachusetts Quarter Proof (4,020,172 made) is the one to compare with.
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.

With 535 million made, the 2000-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 2000-D Massachusetts

Denver made 535,184,000 of the Massachusetts quarter. Among the 5 designs of 2000 it was the second smallest Denver run, between New Hampshire (496 million) and Maryland (557 million).

Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (629 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.

Across the whole program it sits 45th of 50 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Oklahoma at 195 million.

More on the 2000-D

Denver struck 535,184,000 Massachusetts quarters, about 93 million fewer than Philadelphia's 628,600,000. Among the five Denver designs of 2000 that puts it third, behind Virginia (651,616,000) and Maryland (556,532,000). It finished comfortably ahead of New Hampshire and South Carolina.

These were boom years for the program. Every 2000 design passed 370 million at each mint, a level no 2006 design reached at either mint. Many people who had never collected anything were saving one of each. The Minute Man statue on the reverse was dedicated in 1875 for the centennial of the fight at Concord. On the coin, the figure is small and set over the state outline, so a sharp Denver strike shows the musket and the outline of the coat clearly. Wear shows first on the figure's hat and shoulders. A worn 2000-D is a face value coin; a bright uncirculated one with few marks is worth a small premium. Check the D beside Washington's ponytail before you file it.

The golden Sacagawea dollar was introduced, made of manganese brass over copper.

How to recognize it

The Massachusetts design

The reverse places the Minute Man statue, a colonial militiaman holding a musket, over an outline of the state. The words THE BAY STATE run across the design. The statue by Daniel Chester French stands near the North Bridge in Concord, where minutemen faced British troops on April 19, 1775 at the start of the Revolutionary War. Massachusetts ratified the Constitution in 1788. This was the first State quarter of 2000.

The 50 State Quarter design

To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.
