What is a 2000-P Massachusetts Quarter worth?

In circulated condition it's worth face value. Only uncirculated coins with full original luster, or a recognized variety, carry a premium.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with full original luster
  • A die variety or minting error

What to check on your 2000-P

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2000-D (535 million made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2000-S Massachusetts Quarter Proof (4,020,172 made) is the one to compare with.
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.

With 629 million made, the 2000-P still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 2000-P Massachusetts

Philadelphia made 628,600,000 of the Massachusetts quarter. That was the smallest Philadelphia run of the 5 designs issued in 2000, so it's the one from that year you're least likely to find in change.

Denver struck a similar number of the same design (535 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.

Across the whole program it sits 44th of 50 Philadelphia designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Iowa at 214 million.

More on the 2000-P

Philadelphia struck 628,600,000 Massachusetts quarters, the fourth largest Philadelphia run of 2000 after Virginia (943,000,000), Maryland (678,200,000) and New Hampshire (673,040,000). Denver made about 93 million fewer, so the P is the more common of the pair.

Quarters have only carried a P mint mark since 1980, so the small P beside Washington's ponytail is what tells you this one came from Philadelphia. The Massachusetts reverse is one of the simpler designs of the program, a single figure over a state outline with the nickname THE BAY STATE, which leaves a lot of open surface. That open area inside the outline is where scuffs show most, so it's the first place to look when judging a coin from change. The 2000-P turned up in pocket change for years, so for most people it's a coin to spend unless it's truly uncirculated. A bright, unmarked example from a roll is worth a small premium at most.

Elsewhere in US coinage in 2000

The golden Sacagawea dollar was introduced, made of manganese brass over copper.

How to recognize it

The Massachusetts design

The reverse places the Minute Man statue, a colonial militiaman holding a musket, over an outline of the state. The words THE BAY STATE run across the design. The statue by Daniel Chester French stands near the North Bridge in Concord, where minutemen faced British troops on April 19, 1775 at the start of the Revolutionary War. Massachusetts ratified the Constitution in 1788. This was the first State quarter of 2000.

The 50 State Quarter design

To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.
