What to check on your 1999-S

  • Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 1999-D (299 million made).
  • Look for the 1999-P Delaware "Spitting Horse" Quarter (it's on Philadelphia coins, not this one).
  • Judge the grade under good light. State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.

Proofs from 1999 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.

The story of the 1999-S New Jersey

Elsewhere in US coinage in 1999

The 50 State Quarters program began, with five new reverse designs each year in the order the states joined the Union.

How to recognize it

The New Jersey design

George Washington stands in a crowded boat as his soldiers row across the icy Delaware River, with the words CROSSROADS OF THE REVOLUTION above the scene. The image is adapted from Emanuel Leutze's well-known painting Washington Crossing the Delaware. The crossing on the night of December 25, 1776 led to the surprise victory at Trenton, one of many Revolutionary War actions fought on New Jersey soil. New Jersey ratified the Constitution in 1787. Its quarter was the third release of 1999.

The 50 State Quarter design

To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.
