What to check on your 1999-S

  • Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 1999-P (373 million made).
  • Look for the 1999-P Delaware "Spitting Horse" Quarter (it's on Philadelphia coins, not this one).
  • Judge the grade under good light. State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.

Proofs from 1999 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.

The story of the 1999-S Delaware

Elsewhere in US coinage in 1999

The 50 State Quarters program began, with five new reverse designs each year in the order the states joined the Union.

How to recognize it

The Delaware design

Caesar Rodney rides a galloping horse across this reverse, framed by the inscriptions CAESAR RODNEY, THE FIRST STATE and DELAWARE 1787. Rodney was a Delaware delegate to the Continental Congress who rode overnight to Philadelphia in July 1776 to break a tie in his delegation over the vote for independence. Delaware earned its nickname by becoming the first state to ratify the Constitution in 1787. That distinction also made this the first coin of the 50 State Quarters program, released early in 1999.

The 50 State Quarter design

To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.
