What is a 1999-S Georgia Quarter Proof worth?

Age alone gives this coin a small premium, even worn. Sharp details and original surfaces push it higher.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Grade and, for proofs, strong cameo contrast
  • A known variety for the date: 1999-P Delaware "Spitting Horse" Quarter

What to check on your 1999-S

  • Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 1999-P (451 million made).
  • Look for the 1999-P Delaware "Spitting Horse" Quarter (it's on Philadelphia coins, not this one).
  • Judge the grade under good light. State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.

Proofs from 1999 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.

The story of the 1999-S Georgia

Elsewhere in US coinage in 1999

The 50 State Quarters program began, with five new reverse designs each year in the order the states joined the Union.

How to recognize it

The Georgia design

At the center of this design sits a single peach inside an outline of the state, flanked by sprigs of live oak. A ribbon draped across the top carries the state motto WISDOM JUSTICE MODERATION. The peach has long been Georgia's best-known crop and gives the state its nickname, the Peach State, while the live oak is the official state tree. Georgia ratified the Constitution in 1788, the year on the coin. It was the fourth State quarter issued in 1999.

The 50 State Quarter design

To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.
