Quick answers
- Is the 2025-P Althea Gibson Quarter rare?
- Not in absolute terms: 35 million were made. It is one of the smaller runs in the series, though, so uncirculated examples are worth a little more than most dates.
- Is the 2025-P Althea Gibson Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2025 American Women Quarter?
- On the obverse (P, D or S). On this coin the mark is P, for Philadelphia.
- How many 2025-P Althea Gibson Quarter coins were made?
- 35,200,000.
What to check on your 2025-P
- Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2025-D (32 million made).
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster, strike and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.
With 35 million made, the 2025-P still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2025-P Althea Gibson
Philadelphia made 35,200,000 of the Althea Gibson quarter. That was the smallest Philadelphia run of the 5 designs issued in 2025, so it's the one from that year you're least likely to find in change.
Denver struck a similar number of the same design (32 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across every Philadelphia coin in the program, no design had a smaller run.
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2025
The Treasury announced the end of penny production for circulation and the last circulating cents were struck in Philadelphia in November 2025. It was also the final year of the American Women quarters.
How to recognize it
The Althea Gibson design
Althea Gibson (1927 to 2003) broke the color barrier at the U.S. Nationals in 1950 and became the first Black player to win a Grand Slam title, at the French Championships in 1956. She won both Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals in 1957 and again in 1958. In 1964 she became the first Black woman to join the LPGA tour. The reverse shows her standing by the net holding a racket and ball, with the inscription TRAILBLAZING CHAMPION. Don Everhart designed it and Renata Gordon sculpted it.
The American Women Quarter design
The obverse shows a new portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser, originally submitted in the 1931 design competition. Each reverse honors a woman who shaped American history, with her name and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR. Five honorees were issued each year from 2022 to 2025.
