What is a 2023-S Jovita Idar Quarter Proof worth?

Age alone gives this coin a small premium, even worn. Sharp details and original surfaces push it higher.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Grade and, for proofs, strong cameo contrast
  • A die variety or minting error

For market prices, check recent sold results for certified coins in the same grade.

What to check on your 2023-S

  • Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2023-D (185 million made).
  • Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster, strike and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.

Proofs from 2023 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.

How to recognize it

The Jovita Idar design

Jovita Idar (1885 to 1946) was a journalist, teacher, nurse and activist from Laredo, Texas, who fought for the rights of Mexican Americans. She wrote for her family's newspaper La Crónica and in 1911 helped found La Liga Femenil Mexicanista, which offered free education to Mexican American children. During the Mexican Revolution she served as a nurse with La Cruz Blanca. The reverse shows her with clasped hands, her figure filled with words naming her causes and the newspapers she wrote for. John P. McGraw designed and sculpted it.

The American Women Quarter design

The obverse shows a new portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser, originally submitted in the 1931 design competition. Each reverse honors a woman who shaped American history, with her name and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR. Five honorees were issued each year from 2022 to 2025.
