What to check on your 2023-D

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2023-P (373 million made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2023-S Edith Kanakaʻole Quarter Proof (503,400 made) is the one to compare with.
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster, strike and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.

With 369 million made, the 2023-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 2023-D Edith Kanakaʻole

Denver made 368,600,000 of the Edith Kanakaʻole quarter. That was the biggest Denver run of the 5 designs issued in 2023; Jovita Idar had the smallest at 185 million.

Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (373 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.

Across the whole program it's one of the most plentiful Denver designs.

How to recognize it

The Edith Kanakaʻole design

Edith Kanakaʻole (1913 to 1979) was a Native Hawaiian kumu hula, chanter, composer and teacher from the island of Hawaiʻi. She founded the hula school Hālau o Kekuhi, known for its traditional style. At the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo she created courses on Hawaiian language, culture and chant. The reverse shows her face with her hair and lei poʻo flowing into a Hawaiian landscape, representing her work to preserve land and culture. The phrase E HŌ MAI KA ʻIKE, meaning granting the wisdom, appears beside her.

The American Women Quarter design

The obverse shows a new portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser, originally submitted in the 1931 design competition. Each reverse honors a woman who shaped American history, with her name and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR. Five honorees were issued each year from 2022 to 2025.
