What is a 2023-S Bessie Coleman Quarter Proof worth?

Age alone gives this coin a small premium, even worn. Sharp details and original surfaces push it higher.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Grade and, for proofs, strong cameo contrast
  • A die variety or minting error

For market prices, check recent sold results for certified coins in the same grade.

What to check on your 2023-S

  • Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2023-P (302 million made).
  • Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster, strike and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.

Proofs from 2023 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.

How to recognize it

The Bessie Coleman design

Bessie Coleman (1892 to 1926) was the first African American woman and the first Native American woman to earn a pilot's license. Unable to gain admission to flight schools in the United States, she trained in France and received her license on June 15, 1921. Back home she became a popular barnstormer, performing stunts at air shows while hoping to open a flight school for Black aviators. The reverse shows her suiting up in a flight helmet, looking toward a biplane in the clouds, with the date 6.15.1921.

The American Women Quarter design

The obverse shows a new portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser, originally submitted in the 1931 design competition. Each reverse honors a woman who shaped American history, with her name and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR. Five honorees were issued each year from 2022 to 2025.
