Quick answers
- Is the 2024-D Dr. Mary Edwards Walker Quarter rare?
- Not by date: 159 million were struck. A sharp uncirculated coin or a known variety is what makes one special.
- Is the 2024-D Dr. Mary Edwards Walker Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2024 American Women Quarter?
- On the obverse (P, D or S). On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
- How many 2024-D Dr. Mary Edwards Walker Quarter coins were made?
- 159,400,000.
What to check on your 2024-D
- Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2024-P (141 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2024-S Dr. Mary Edwards Walker Quarter Proof (449,240 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster, strike and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.
With 159 million made, the 2024-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2024-D Dr. Mary Edwards Walker
Denver made 159,400,000 of the Dr. Mary Edwards Walker quarter. Among the 5 designs of 2024 it was the second smallest Denver run, between Celia Cruz (156 million) and Zitkala-Ša (170 million).
Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (141 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it sits 7th of 20 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Althea Gibson at 32 million.
How to recognize it
The Dr. Mary Edwards Walker design
Dr. Mary Edwards Walker (1832 to 1919) graduated from Syracuse Medical College in 1855 and served as a surgeon with Union forces during the Civil War. Captured by Confederate troops in 1864, she was held as a prisoner in Richmond for several months. In 1865 she received the Medal of Honor, becoming the only woman ever awarded it. The reverse shows her holding a pocket surgical kit and wearing the medal on her uniform, with the inscription MEDAL OF HONOR 1865. Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted it.
The American Women Quarter design
The obverse shows a new portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser, originally submitted in the 1931 design competition. Each reverse honors a woman who shaped American history, with her name and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR. Five honorees were issued each year from 2022 to 2025.
