The series in 3 stages

The golden dollar and the soaring eagle (2000 to 2008)

The Sacagawea dollar launched in 2000 with a large publicity push, including dollars handed out through a cereal promotion and at a national retail chain. Philadelphia and Denver struck well over a billion coins that first year. People liked the gold color but kept spending paper dollars and the coins piled up in bank vaults.

The first Native American reverses (2009 to 2015)

In 2009 the reverse began changing every year to honor a Native American contribution to American history: the Three Sisters of corn, beans and squash in 2009, the Great Law of Peace in 2010, the Wampanoag treaty in 2011, trade routes in 2012, the treaty with the Delawares in 2013, Native hospitality in 2014 and the Mohawk ironworkers in 2015. Glenna Goodacre's portrait of Sacagawea stayed on the obverse.

Code talkers to Ely Parker (2016 to 2022)

The later designs turned to individual people and modern service: the Code Talkers in 2016, Sequoyah in 2017, Jim Thorpe in 2018, Native Americans in space in 2019, Elizabeth Peratrovich in 2020, Native American military service in 2021 and Ely S. Parker in 2022. Each coin page here explains its own design.

Identifying and grading Sacagawea dollars

Golden dollars tarnish easily, so bright original color matters. Check Sacagawea's cheek and the eagle's feathers for wear.

Glenna Goodacre's obverse shows Sacagawea looking over her shoulder while carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste. From 2000 to 2008 the reverse showed a soaring eagle by Thomas Rogers. From 2009 each year has a new reverse on a Native American theme and the date and mint mark moved to the edge. The golden color comes from a manganese brass outer layer.

What the value bands mean

  • Face value: worth its face in worn condition; only uncirculated coins and varieties carry a premium.
  • Small premium: sells for a little over face or metal value even when worn.
  • Collector premium: scarcer than usual, so worn coins sell well above face or metal value.
  • Significant rarity: a key date, valuable in any condition and often faked.

Bands describe a coin in ordinary circulated condition. An uncirculated coin with full original luster sits a band or more higher. Recognized varieties can be worth far more than the date itself.

Frequently asked questions

Which Sacagawea dollars are worth the most?

By mintage, the scarcest circulation issues are the 2022-D Ely S. Parker Native American Dollar (980,000), 2022-P Ely S. Parker Native American Dollar (980,000), 2020-D Elizabeth Peratrovich and Alaska's Anti-Discrimination Law Native American Dollar (1,260,000). Varieties and top-grade coins of common dates can also be valuable.

Are Sacagawea dollars silver?

No. 2000 to 2022: manganese brass (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel).

Why does this chart show bands instead of prices?

Prices change with the market and with each coin's grade, so any printed price goes out of date. A value band tells you which coins are worth a closer look; for a current price, check recent sold results for certified coins in the same grade.
