What is a 2018-P Jim Thorpe Native American Dollar worth?
It's scarcer than a typical date, so even circulated examples sell above face. The best uncirculated coins are where the money is.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with full original luster
- A die variety or minting error
- Certification by PCGS or NGC, which buyers expect for scarce dates

Quick answers
- Is the 2018-P Jim Thorpe Native American Dollar rare?
- Somewhat. 1,400,000 were made, fewer than most dates, so collectors treat it as a semi-key.
- Is the 2018-P Jim Thorpe Native American Dollar silver?
- No. It's manganese brass (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel). Circulating silver dollars ended with the 1935 Peace dollar. Some Eisenhower dollars with an S mint mark were made in 40% silver for collectors, but circulation Ike dollars are copper-nickel clad.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2018 Sacagawea Dollar?
- On the edge, incused with the date. On this coin the mark is P, for Philadelphia.
- How many 2018-P Jim Thorpe Native American Dollar coins were made?
- 1,400,000.
What to check on your 2018-P
- Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2018-D (1.4 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2018-S Jim Thorpe Native American Dollar Proof (517,081 made) is the one to compare with.
- Judge the grade under good light. Golden dollars tarnish easily, so bright original color matters. Check Sacagawea's cheek and the eagle's feathers for wear.
The story of the 2018-P Jim Thorpe
Philadelphia made 1,400,000 of the Jim Thorpe native american dollar.
Denver struck a similar number of the same design (1.4 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it's one of the Philadelphia designs made in the smallest numbers, 3rd from the bottom of 23.
Code talkers to Ely Parker (2016 to 2022)
The later designs turned to individual people and modern service: the Code Talkers in 2016, Sequoyah in 2017, Jim Thorpe in 2018, Native Americans in space in 2019, Elizabeth Peratrovich in 2020, Native American military service in 2021 and Ely S. Parker in 2022. Each coin page here explains its own design.
Mintages in these years were small by circulating standards and most coins went to collectors or to banks that ordered them, so you will rarely see one in change. Look for coins straight from mint rolls: the golden surface marks and tarnishes easily and a clean, bright coin is what collectors look for.

The American Innovation dollar program began, with a new reverse for each state and territory celebrating an invention or innovator.
How to recognize it
The Jim Thorpe design
Jim Thorpe appears on the 2018 reverse, with the foreground highlighting his achievements in football and as an Olympian. A member of the Sac and Fox Nation, Thorpe first gained fame as a football player at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. At the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm he won gold medals in both the pentathlon and the decathlon. He later played professional football and baseball. In 1920 he became the first president of the league that became the NFL.
The Sacagawea Dollar design
Glenna Goodacre's obverse shows Sacagawea looking over her shoulder while carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste. From 2000 to 2008 the reverse showed a soaring eagle by Thomas Rogers. From 2009 each year has a new reverse on a Native American theme and the date and mint mark moved to the edge. The golden color comes from a manganese brass outer layer.
