What to check on your 2001-S
- Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2001-D (428 million made).
- Judge the grade under good light. State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.
Proofs from 2001 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.
How to recognize it
The North Carolina design
Taken from a famous photograph of the event, this reverse shows the Wright Flyer lifting off with Orville Wright at the controls as Wilbur runs alongside. The words FIRST FLIGHT appear above the scene. The Wright brothers made the first powered, controlled airplane flight near Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903, choosing the Outer Banks for its steady winds and soft sand. North Carolina ratified the Constitution in 1789. Its quarter was the second release of 2001.
The 50 State Quarter design
To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.
