What is a 2017-S Sequoyah Native American Dollar Proof worth?

Age alone gives this coin a small premium, even worn. Sharp details and original surfaces push it higher.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Grade and, for proofs, strong cameo contrast
  • A die variety or minting error

For market prices, check recent sold results for certified coins in the same grade.

On the edge, incused with the date. On this coin the mark is S, for San Francisco.

What to check on your 2017-S

  • Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2017-D (2.7 million made).
  • Judge the grade under good light. Golden dollars tarnish easily, so bright original color matters. Check Sacagawea's cheek and the eagle's feathers for wear.

Proofs from 2017 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.

The story of the 2017-S Sequoyah

Code talkers to Ely Parker (2016 to 2022)

The later designs turned to individual people and modern service: the Code Talkers in 2016, Sequoyah in 2017, Jim Thorpe in 2018, Native Americans in space in 2019, Elizabeth Peratrovich in 2020, Native American military service in 2021 and Ely S. Parker in 2022. Each coin page here explains its own design.

Mintages in these years were small by circulating standards and most coins went to collectors or to banks that ordered them, so you will rarely see one in change. Look for coins straight from mint rolls: the golden surface marks and tarnishes easily and a clean, bright coin is what collectors look for.

Elsewhere in US coinage in 2017

Philadelphia cents carried a "P" mint mark for the first time, marking the 225th anniversary of the US Mint.

How to recognize it

The Sequoyah design

The 2017 reverse shows Sequoyah in profile, writing the words Sequoyah from Cherokee Nation in the Cherokee syllabary along the border. Sequoyah created the syllabary, a writing system with a symbol for each syllable of the Cherokee language. He completed it around 1821. Within a few years many Cherokee people could read and write in their own language. In 1828 the Cherokee Phoenix began publication as a newspaper printed partly in the syllabary.

The Sacagawea Dollar design

Glenna Goodacre's obverse shows Sacagawea looking over her shoulder while carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste. From 2000 to 2008 the reverse showed a soaring eagle by Thomas Rogers. From 2009 each year has a new reverse on a Native American theme and the date and mint mark moved to the edge. The golden color comes from a manganese brass outer layer.
