What to check on your 2022-D
- Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2022-P (310 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2022-S Wilma Mankiller Quarter Proof (304,640 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster, strike and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.
With 297 million made, the 2022-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2022-D Wilma Mankiller
Denver made 296,800,000 of the Wilma Mankiller quarter. That was the biggest Denver run of the 5 designs issued in 2022; Nina Otero-Warren had the smallest at 219 million.
Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (310 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it's one of the most plentiful Denver designs.
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2022
The American Women quarters program began, alongside a new obverse portrait of Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser.
How to recognize it
The Wilma Mankiller design
Wilma Mankiller (1945 to 2010) was the first woman to serve as principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, leading it from 1985 to 1995. During her tenure she focused on community development, health care and education. Her leadership earned her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. The reverse shows her wrapped in a traditional shawl, gazing forward with the wind at her back, beside the seven-pointed star of the Cherokee Nation. The words CHEROKEE NATION appear in the Cherokee syllabary along with PRINCIPAL CHIEF.
The American Women Quarter design
The obverse shows a new portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser, originally submitted in the 1931 design competition. Each reverse honors a woman who shaped American history, with her name and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR. Five honorees were issued each year from 2022 to 2025.
