What is a 2023-P Louisiana: Higgins boat Innovation Dollar worth?
It's scarcer than a typical date, so even circulated examples sell above face. The best uncirculated coins are where the money is.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with full original luster
- A die variety or minting error
- Certification by PCGS or NGC, which buyers expect for scarce dates

What to check on your 2023-P
- Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2023-D (430,625 made).
- Check the date and mint mark under magnification for tooling or added letters. Scarce dates are the ones forgers alter.
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2023-S Louisiana: Higgins boat Innovation Dollar Proof (61,847 made) is the one to compare with.
- Judge the grade under good light. These are sold in rolls, bags and sets, so most survive uncirculated. Value depends on luster and freedom from marks.
Low-mintage dates attract altered and counterfeit coins. Check that the mint mark and date have not been tooled or added, or buy one already certified by PCGS or NGC.
The story of the 2023-P Louisiana: Higgins boat
Philadelphia made 465,025 of the Louisiana: Higgins boat innovation dollar. Among the 4 designs of 2023 it was the second smallest Philadelphia run, between Mississippi: First human lung transplant (399,275) and Ohio: Underground Railroad (496,275).
Denver struck a similar number of the same design (430,625), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it sits 15th of 29 Philadelphia designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Mississippi: First human lung transplant at 399,275.
More on the 2023-P
Philadelphia struck 465,025 Louisiana coins, a solid middle figure for 2023 and well above Denver's 430,625 for the same design. The 2023 releases show more variation than earlier years: Philadelphia's Indiana reached 500,950 while Denver's Mississippi stopped at 383,600. Compared with the tightly bunched coins of 2022, the mint mark makes a bigger difference here. Only the Mississippi coin had a smaller Philadelphia run that year.
Louisiana was the eighteenth state, admitted in 1812, so its coin was the second Innovation dollar of 2023 after Ohio. If you already own the 2002 Louisiana quarter, you have another state coin with a strong New Orleans link: the trumpet on that reverse honors the city's jazz, while this dollar honors its wartime boatbuilders. Look closely at the lowered ramp, which is the main raised feature of the design and the first spot to show nicks. Philadelphia coins from rolls are usually uncirculated, so value sits at face value or a small premium.
How to recognize it
The Louisiana: Higgins boat design
Louisiana's 2023 dollar honors the Higgins boat, a landing craft built by Andrew Jackson Higgins and his New Orleans company. Developed from shallow draft boats designed for Louisiana's bayous, the craft had a bow ramp that dropped so troops and vehicles could move straight onto a beach. Thousands were used in World War II, including the Normandy landings in 1944. The reverse shows an empty Higgins boat with its ramp open on a quiet beach, inscribed THE HIGGINS BOAT.
The American Innovation Dollar design
The obverse shows the Statue of Liberty in profile with IN GOD WE TRUST and $1. Each reverse honors an innovation or innovator from one state or territory, issued in the order the states joined the Union. The date, mint mark and E PLURIBUS UNUM are lettered on the edge, which is where to look for the mint mark.
