What is a 2023-D Louisiana: Higgins boat Innovation Dollar worth?
It's scarcer than a typical date, so even circulated examples sell above face. The best uncirculated coins are where the money is.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with full original luster
- A die variety or minting error
- Certification by PCGS or NGC, which buyers expect for scarce dates

What to check on your 2023-D
- Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2023-P (465,025 made).
- Check the date and mint mark under magnification for tooling or added letters. Scarce dates are the ones forgers alter.
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2023-S Louisiana: Higgins boat Innovation Dollar Proof (61,847 made) is the one to compare with.
- Judge the grade under good light. These are sold in rolls, bags and sets, so most survive uncirculated. Value depends on luster and freedom from marks.
Low-mintage dates attract altered and counterfeit coins. Check that the mint mark and date have not been tooled or added, or buy one already certified by PCGS or NGC.
The story of the 2023-D Louisiana: Higgins boat
Denver made 430,625 of the Louisiana: Higgins boat innovation dollar. Among the 4 designs of 2023 it was the second smallest Denver run, between Mississippi: First human lung transplant (383,600) and Ohio: Underground Railroad (448,225).
Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (465,025), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it sits 6th of 29 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Georgia: Trustees' Garden at 368,475.
More on the 2023-D
Denver struck 430,625 Higgins boat dollars, about 34,000 fewer than Philadelphia's 465,025. Among the four Denver issues of 2023, only the Mississippi lung transplant coin, at 383,600, was lower, so the Louisiana D is the second scarcest Denver coin of the year. That's still a big number by collector standards, but it's worth knowing if you're assembling the Denver set.
The boats were built in New Orleans, which is one reason the city became home to the museum now called the National WWII Museum, founded as the National D-Day Museum. Dwight Eisenhower is widely quoted as calling Andrew Higgins the man who won the war, a line that makes this coin a fun companion to an Eisenhower dollar in a collection. The empty boat and flat beach leave a lot of open surface, which shows bag marks on Denver coins quickly. Look for clean fields and full luster. Plan on face value, or a small premium for a really clean one.
How to recognize it
The Louisiana: Higgins boat design
Louisiana's 2023 dollar honors the Higgins boat, a landing craft built by Andrew Jackson Higgins and his New Orleans company. Developed from shallow draft boats designed for Louisiana's bayous, the craft had a bow ramp that dropped so troops and vehicles could move straight onto a beach. Thousands were used in World War II, including the Normandy landings in 1944. The reverse shows an empty Higgins boat with its ramp open on a quiet beach, inscribed THE HIGGINS BOAT.
The American Innovation Dollar design
The obverse shows the Statue of Liberty in profile with IN GOD WE TRUST and $1. Each reverse honors an innovation or innovator from one state or territory, issued in the order the states joined the Union. The date, mint mark and E PLURIBUS UNUM are lettered on the edge, which is where to look for the mint mark.
