What to check on your 2020-S
- Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2020-W (2 million made).
- Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.
The story of the 2020-S Weir Farm
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2020
West Point again struck quarters with a W mint mark for circulation, this time on all five 2020 designs.
How to recognize it
The Weir Farm design
Connecticut's 2020 quarter, second of the year, shows an artist in a painter's smock working at an easel outside the studio of Julian Alden Weir. The inscription A NATIONAL PARK FOR ART appears with WEIR FARM and CONNECTICUT. Weir, a leading American Impressionist, acquired the farm in 1882 and painted its landscapes for decades. Weir Farm preserves his home, studios and grounds, where artists still come to work. Justin Kunz designed the reverse, which Phebe Hemphill sculpted.
The America the Beautiful Quarter design
Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
