What is a 2020-P Tallgrass Prairie Quarter worth?
In circulated condition it's worth face value. Only uncirculated coins with full original luster, or a recognized variety, carry a premium.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with full original luster
- A die variety or minting error

Quick answers
- Is the 2020-P Tallgrass Prairie Quarter rare?
- No. 101 million were made, a typical run for the series. Condition and varieties decide its value, not the date.
- Is the 2020-P Tallgrass Prairie Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2020 America the Beautiful Quarter?
- On the obverse, to the right of Washington's ribbon. "W" quarters were struck in 2019 and 2020 and released into circulation in small numbers. On this coin the mark is P, for Philadelphia.
- How many 2020-P Tallgrass Prairie Quarter coins were made?
- 101,200,000.
What to check on your 2020-P
- Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2020-W (2 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2020-S Tallgrass Prairie Quarter Proof (545,638 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.
With 101 million made, the 2020-P still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2020-P Tallgrass Prairie
Philadelphia made 101,200,000 of the Tallgrass Prairie coin. That was the smallest Philadelphia run of the 5 designs issued in 2020, so it's the one from that year you're least likely to find in change.
Denver struck more of the same design, 142 million, so the 2020-P is the scarcer of the pair by about 29 percent.
Across the whole program it sits 17th of 56 Philadelphia designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Chaco Culture at 22 million.
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2020
West Point again struck quarters with a W mint mark for circulation, this time on all five 2020 designs.
How to recognize it
The Tallgrass Prairie design
Kansas's quarter closes 2020 with a skyward view of a regal fritillary butterfly against big bluestem and Indian grass. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, established in 1996 in the Flint Hills, protects a remnant of the tallgrass prairie that once covered much of central North America. Most of that prairie has since been plowed for farming. The regal fritillary is a prairie butterfly whose caterpillars feed on violets. Emily Damstra designed the reverse and Renata Gordon sculpted it.
The America the Beautiful Quarter design
Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
