What is a 2019-W River Of No Return Quarter worth?
Collectors pay a real premium for this date, worn or not, because far fewer were made than usual. Uncirculated pieces go much higher.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with full original luster
- A die variety or minting error
- Certification by PCGS or NGC, which buyers expect for scarce dates

Quick answers
- Is the 2019-W River Of No Return Quarter rare?
- Somewhat. 2,000,000 were made, fewer than most dates, so collectors treat it as a semi-key.
- Is the 2019-W River Of No Return Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2019 America the Beautiful Quarter?
- On the obverse, to the right of Washington's ribbon. "W" quarters were struck in 2019 and 2020 and released into circulation in small numbers. On this coin the mark is W, for West Point.
- How many 2019-W River Of No Return Quarter coins were made?
- 2,000,000.
What to check on your 2019-W
- Make sure the mint mark really is a W. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2019-P (223 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2019-S River Of No Return Quarter Proof (729,950 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.
The story of the 2019-W River Of No Return
West Point made 2,000,000 of the River Of No Return coin. That was the biggest West Point run of the 5 designs issued in 2019; Lowell had the smallest at 2 million.
Denver struck more of the same design, 252 million, so the 2019-W is the scarcer of the pair by about 99 percent.
Across the whole program it's one of the West Point designs made in the smallest numbers, 5th from the bottom of 10.
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2019
The West Point Mint struck quarters with a "W" mint mark for the first time and released them into circulation to encourage people to search their change.
How to recognize it
The River Of No Return design
Idaho's Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness closes 2019 with a piloted drift boat running the rushing Salmon River, surrounded by the trees and rock formations of the wilderness. The river earned its nickname because early boats could travel down its rapids but not back up. Designated in 1980, the area is one of the largest wildernesses in the contiguous United States. Emily Damstra designed the reverse and Renata Gordon sculpted it.
The America the Beautiful Quarter design
Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
