What to check on your 2018-S
- Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2018-D (213 million made).
- Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.
The story of the 2018-S Apostle Islands
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2018
The American Innovation dollar program began, with a new reverse for each state and territory celebrating an invention or innovator.
How to recognize it
The Apostle Islands design
Wisconsin's quarter, second of 2018, shows the sea caves of Devils Island with its lighthouse in the background and a kayaker paddling in the foreground. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, established in 1970, protects 21 islands in Lake Superior along with a strip of mainland shore. Wave-carved sandstone caves and historic light stations are among its best-known features. Richard Masters designed the reverse, which Renata Gordon sculpted.
The America the Beautiful Quarter design
Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
