What to check on your 2018-P
- Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2018-D (183 million made).
- Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.
The 5 ounce America the Beautiful coins are 3 inches (76.2 mm) across and contain five troy ounces of .999 fine silver, with the same designs as the quarters. The bullion version, sold through authorized dealers, has no mint mark; the burnished version made for collectors carries a P mint mark and a satin finish. The edge is lettered with the fineness and weight instead of being reeded.
The story of the 2018-P Pictured Rocks
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2018
The American Innovation dollar program began, with a new reverse for each state and territory celebrating an invention or innovator.
How to recognize it
The Pictured Rocks design
Michigan's Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore opens the 2018 releases with Chapel Rock and the lone white pine that grows on top of it. Pictured Rocks was authorized in 1966 as the first national lakeshore. Its sandstone cliffs rise above Lake Superior and are streaked in bands of color by minerals seeping from the rock. Paul C. Balan designed the reverse and Michael Gaudioso sculpted it.
The America the Beautiful Quarter design
Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
