Quick answers
- Is the 2017-D George Rogers Clark Quarter rare?
- No. 181 million were made, a typical run for the series. Condition and varieties decide its value, not the date.
- Is the 2017-D George Rogers Clark Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2017 America the Beautiful Quarter?
- On the obverse, to the right of Washington's ribbon. "W" quarters were struck in 2019 and 2020 and released into circulation in small numbers. On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
- How many 2017-D George Rogers Clark Quarter coins were made?
- 180,800,000.
What to check on your 2017-D
- Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2017-P (197 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2017-S George Rogers Clark Quarter Proof (629,997 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.
With 181 million made, the 2017-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2017-D George Rogers Clark
Denver made 180,800,000 of the George Rogers Clark coin. That was the smallest Denver run of the 5 designs issued in 2017, so it's the one from that year you're least likely to find in change.
Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (197 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it sits 31st of 56 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Acadia at 22 million.
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2017
Philadelphia cents carried a "P" mint mark for the first time, marking the 225th anniversary of the US Mint.
How to recognize it
The George Rogers Clark design
Indiana's quarter closes 2017 with George Rogers Clark leading his men through flooded plains toward Fort Sackville at Vincennes. In February 1779 Clark's small force marched across miles of icy, waterlogged country to surprise the British garrison, which surrendered. The victory strengthened American claims to the lands northwest of the Ohio River. George Rogers Clark National Historical Park marks the site with a classical memorial. Frank Morris designed the reverse, which Michael Gaudioso sculpted.
The America the Beautiful Quarter design
Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
