What to check on your 2016

• There's no mint mark on this one, so the date and condition are what matter.
• Check the date and mint mark under magnification for tooling or added letters. Scarce dates are the ones forgers alter.
• Don't clean it. Cleaning leaves fine scratches and an unnatural shine that collectors avoid.
• Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.

The 5 ounce America the Beautiful coins are 3 inches (76.2 mm) across and contain five troy ounces of .999 fine silver, with the same designs as the quarters. The bullion version, sold through authorized dealers, has no mint mark; the burnished version made for collectors carries a P mint mark and a satin finish. The edge is lettered with the fineness and weight instead of being reeded. Low-mintage dates attract altered and counterfeit coins. Check that the date have not been tooled or added, or buy one already certified by PCGS or NGC.

How to recognize it

The Theodore Roosevelt design

North Dakota's 2016 quarter, fourth of the year, shows a young Theodore Roosevelt on horseback surveying the badlands near the Little Missouri River. Roosevelt first came to Dakota Territory in 1883 to hunt bison and soon invested in cattle ranches there. He later credited his years in the badlands with shaping his commitment to conservation. The park bearing his name protects rugged badlands, prairie and wildlife. Joel Iskowitz designed the reverse and Phebe Hemphill sculpted it.

The America the Beautiful Quarter design

Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
