Quick answers
- Is the 2016-D Cumberland Gap Quarter rare?
- Not by date: 223 million were struck. A sharp uncirculated coin or a known variety is what makes one special.
- Is the 2016-D Cumberland Gap Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2016 America the Beautiful Quarter?
- On the obverse, to the right of Washington's ribbon. "W" quarters were struck in 2019 and 2020 and released into circulation in small numbers. On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
- How many 2016-D Cumberland Gap Quarter coins were made?
- 223,200,000.
What to check on your 2016-D
- Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2016-P (215 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2016-S Cumberland Gap Quarter Proof (654,516 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.
With 223 million made, the 2016-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2016-D Cumberland Gap
Denver made 223,200,000 of the Cumberland Gap coin. Among the 5 designs of 2016 it was the middle Denver run, between Shawnee (152 million) and Theodore Roosevelt (223 million).
Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (215 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it sits 44th of 56 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Acadia at 22 million.
How to recognize it
The Cumberland Gap design
Kentucky's quarter, second in 2016, shows a frontiersman standing at Cumberland Gap and gazing west across the mountains. The gap is a natural pass through the Cumberland Mountains near the point where Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee meet. In 1775 Daniel Boone helped blaze the Wilderness Road through it, a route that carried settlers into Kentucky and the lands beyond. Barbara Fox designed the reverse and Joseph Menna sculpted it.
The America the Beautiful Quarter design
Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
