Quick answers

Is the 2011-D Vicksburg Quarter rare?
No. 33 million were made, a typical run for the series. Condition and varieties decide its value, not the date.
Is the 2011-D Vicksburg Quarter silver?
No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
Where is the mint mark on a 2011 America the Beautiful Quarter?
On the obverse, to the right of Washington's ribbon. "W" quarters were struck in 2019 and 2020 and released into circulation in small numbers. On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
How many 2011-D Vicksburg Quarter coins were made?
33,400,000.

What to check on your 2011-D

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2011-P (31 million made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2011-S Vicksburg Quarter Proof (1,267,691 made) is the one to compare with.
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.

With 33 million made, the 2011-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 2011-D Vicksburg

Denver made 33,400,000 of the Vicksburg coin. Among the 5 designs of 2011 it was the second largest Denver run, between Glacier (31 million) and Chickasaw (69 million).

Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (31 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.

Across the whole program it sits 7th of 56 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Acadia at 22 million.

How to recognize it

The Vicksburg design

Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi is honored by the fourth 2011 quarter. The reverse shows the ironclad gunboat USS Cairo on the Yazoo River as it looked while serving the Union Navy during the Civil War. The Cairo sank in December 1862 after striking a mine; it was raised in the 1960s and is now displayed at the park. The 1863 siege of Vicksburg gave the Union control of the Mississippi River. Thomas Cleveland designed the reverse and Joseph Menna sculpted it.

The America the Beautiful Quarter design

Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
