What is a 2022 Pride 50p worth?

5 million were made, so the 2022 Pride 50p is easy to find. A circulated one is worth face value; collectors pay a little more only for uncirculated coins and coins still in their original Royal Mint pack.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with no scratches or contact marks
  • Original Royal Mint pack or presentation folder
  • A genuine mint error, confirmed by an expert

For market prices, look at recent sold results for the same coin in the same condition, not asking prices.

Why the 2022 Pride 50p was made

The first official Pride march in the UK took place in London on 1 July 1972, organized by the Gay Liberation Front. It came only five years after the law in England and Wales had partly decriminalized sex between men. Those who marched did so at a time when being openly gay could still cost people their jobs and families. Fifty years later, Pride events take place in towns and cities across the country, drawing huge crowds every summer.

The Royal Mint marked that half century with a 50p in 2022. The coin had a circulation mintage of 5,000,000. That put it into change in the same year as the Queen's Platinum Jubilee 50p, so 2022 gave collectors two very different coins with almost identical mintages. The design is by Dominique Holmes. The coin was welcomed by many as a sign of how far attitudes had moved since that first march. It also gives the 50p series a subject that sits alongside its anniversaries of laws and voting rights. For people who marched in those early years, finding the word PROTEST on an official British coin carries real meaning.

How to recognize it

Dominique Holmes's design shows five layered rainbows, the symbol of the LGBTQ+ community, carrying the word PRIDE with PROTEST, VISIBILITY, UNITY and EQUALITY, the values of Pride in London. The rainbows sweep across the coin. Those words are the clearest way to confirm you have it. On the circulating coin the rainbows are shown as raised arcs in plain cupronickel, not in color, so the design relies on texture and line rather than bright stripes. The words are small, so a magnifier helps if your coin is worn. The date reads 2022. Jody Clark's portrait of the Queen, used on her coins from 2015, appears on the obverse. It is a standard seven-sided 50p, 27.3 mm across.

The other side carries Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, introduced in 2015 and the last of her reign.

2022 Pride 50p by the numbers

By the numbers, the 2022 Pride 50p ranks 41st lowest of 76 circulating 50p coins with a published mintage. The next scarcer is the 2016 Squirrel Nutkin 50p (5 million); the next more common is the 2023 Coronation of King Charles III 50p (5 million).

For scale, the most common is the 1973 EEC Hands 50p with 89.8 million, about 18 times as many. The scarcest is the 1992 Single Market 50p with 109,000, 46 times fewer than this one.

It shared 2022 with 2 other circulating 50p designs: the Platinum Jubilee (5 million) and the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial (9.6 million). The 2022 Pride 50p was the scarcest of the year.

What to check on your 2022 Pride 50p

  • Confirm the design. The reverse should match the Pride described above and carry the date 2022; similar designs from other years are a common mix-up.
  • Weigh it if you can: a genuine 27.3 mm 50p weighs 8.0 g. Copies are often light, slightly soft in detail or the wrong color.
  • Ignore painted or colored versions sold online as special editions. Color added after the coin left the Mint does not make it a Royal Mint issue and does not add collector value.
  • Look at the surfaces under a bright light. Coins straight from a pack have unbroken luster; change-worn coins show scuffs on the high points of the portrait and design.

Five million coins is a moderate mintage. The Pride 50p is not scarce, so a circulated example is a face value coin. The raised rainbow arcs wear quickly, so check them under good light if you are picking a coin to keep. As with most modern 50ps, the Royal Mint sold brilliant uncirculated examples in packs. Pack coins have bright fields and crisp edges on every arc, while coins from change look softer and carry scratches. Any colored coin found in change has been painted privately; the circulating issue is plain metal.

Frequently asked questions

What do the words on the Pride 50p say?

Alongside the word Pride, the coin carries Protest, Visibility, Unity and Equality, the values of Pride in London. They sit among layered rainbows, the symbol of the LGBTQ+ community, on a coin marking 50 years since the first UK Pride march in 1972.

How many Pride 50p coins were made?

The Royal Mint struck 5,000,000 Pride 50ps for circulation in 2022. That is a moderate mintage for a modern 50p, so it is not rare and circulated coins are face value, though clean ones make good keepsakes.
