What is a 2021 Winnie the Pooh: Tigger 50p worth?

This design was never released into circulation. The Royal Mint sold it in brilliant uncirculated packs and annual sets, so almost every example is a collector piece. One found in change is still legal tender at 50 pence; out of its pack it brings a small premium at most, while a coin still sealed in its original packaging is what collectors want.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with no scratches or contact marks
  • Original Royal Mint pack or presentation folder
  • A genuine mint error, confirmed by an expert

Why the 2021 Winnie the Pooh: Tigger 50p was made

Tigger was the last major character to arrive in the Hundred Acre Wood. He first appears in The House at Pooh Corner, published in 1928, where he turns up at Pooh's house in the night and spends the next morning finding out what Tiggers like to eat. Honey, haycorns and thistles all fail before he discovers that Tiggers like Roo's Extract of Malt. His boundless energy makes him one of the most popular characters in the stories. A later chapter sees him stuck up a tree with Roo, unable to climb down.

The Royal Mint gave Tigger his own 50p in 2021 as part of its Winnie the Pooh series. The coin was sold only in brilliant uncirculated packs and never released into circulation. If one lands in your change, it came from a pack and was spent. It is legal tender at 50p and works in any shop, but since banks never had any to issue, finding one in a till is a rare event. Those few are pack coins that someone chose to spend.

How to recognize it

The reverse shows Tigger on his own, with the design credited to The Walt Disney Company. The obverse carries the queen's portrait by Jody Clark with the 2021 date. Tigger also appears on the 2021 Winnie the Pooh and Friends coin, but there he shares the space with the rest of the cast; a coin with Tigger alone is this one. A single striped figure on a 2021 coin means Tigger. It is struck on the normal seven-sided cupronickel blank with a plain edge and is the same size as every other 50p in your purse, so the picture is the only way to tell it apart.

The other side carries Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, introduced in 2015 and the last of her reign.

2021 Winnie the Pooh: Tigger 50p by the numbers

No circulation mintage exists for the 2021 Winnie the Pooh: Tigger 50p because none were released to banks. The Royal Mint's other collector-only 50p coins dated 2021 were John Logie Baird, Decimalisation, Dinosauria, Team GB, Winnie the Pooh and Friends, Charles Babbage, Winnie the Pooh: Owl, Insulin and The Snowman.

No commemorative 50p dated 2021 was released for circulation, which is why so many people hunting change for new designs never see this one.

What to check on your 2021 Winnie the Pooh: Tigger 50p

  • Confirm the design. The reverse should match the Winnie the Pooh: Tigger described above and carry the date 2021; similar designs from other years are a common mix-up.
  • Weigh it if you can: a genuine 27.3 mm 50p weighs 8.0 g. Copies are often light, slightly soft in detail or the wrong color.
  • Ignore painted or colored versions sold online as special editions. Color added after the coin left the Mint does not make it a Royal Mint issue and does not add collector value.
  • Look at the surfaces under a bright light. Coins straight from a pack have unbroken luster; change-worn coins show scuffs on the high points of the portrait and design.

Tigger is a favorite character. His coin is one of the more sought-after in the Pooh series. With no circulation mintage, every loose Tigger 50p began in a pack. Sealed packs are where the collector premium sits. A coin found in change usually shows wear on Tigger's face and stripes, leaving it at face value or a small premium. The stripes are the best place to judge condition: crisp on a pack coin, smoothed on one that has been in circulation. Bright, unbroken luster is another sign of a coin fresh from its pack.
