What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with crisp edge lettering
- Original Royal Mint pack or presentation folder

Why the 2024 Winston Churchill £2 was made
Winston Churchill was born at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire on 30 November 1874. Before his political career he served as a soldier and worked as a war correspondent. His escape from captivity during the Boer War made him famous at home. He was elected to Parliament in 1900. He went on to become Prime Minister in 1940, leading Britain through the Second World War. He later served a second term in the post from 1951 to 1955. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 and died in 1965. That year a crown coin carried his portrait, a rare honor for someone who was not a monarch. The Royal Mint marked 150 years since his birth with this two-pound coin in 2024.
The Churchill £2 was offered to collectors and not put into circulation. The Royal Mint sold it as a brilliant uncirculated coin and in the 2024 annual sets. If you find one in change, someone spent a pack coin. It's legal tender and can be used for two pounds.
How to recognize it
Natasha Seaward's reverse shows Churchill as a young man, not the older wartime leader people usually picture, with the dates 1874 - 1965 placed either side of him. The portrait catches him around the time of his early adventures and first years in politics. The edge reads PAVE THE WAY FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM. As a 2024 coin, the obverse shows King Charles III by Martin Jennings. The young portrait is the key detail, since most familiar images show him in later life. The dates confirm the identity. An edge with different wording is a clear warning sign, whatever the reverse shows.
The other side carries Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III, first used in 2022.
2024 Winston Churchill £2 by the numbers
No circulation mintage exists for the 2024 Winston Churchill £2 because none were released to banks. The Royal Mint's other collector-only £2 coins dated 2024 were National Gallery.
No commemorative £2 dated 2024 was released for circulation, which is why so many people hunting change for new designs never see this one.
What to check on your 2024 Winston Churchill £2
- Read the edge. It should say PAVE THE WAY FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM. A wrong or missing edge inscription is the quickest sign of a counterfeit.
- Check the two metals: a silver-colored center and a gold-colored ring, with the ring tight and level all the way around.
- Weigh it: a genuine two-metal £2 weighs 12.0 g. Fakes are often a little light and softer in detail.
- Compare the portrait and lettering with a known genuine coin. Blurry letters, a flat portrait or uneven spacing point to a copy.
There's no circulation mintage, so a spent Churchill £2 is an uncommon find in change. Interest in Churchill is enduring. This coin draws history collectors as well as coin collectors. A sharp pack coin attracts a collector premium, while a worn one typically a small premium. Fine details in the face and hair go first with wear. A genuine coin has edge lettering matching the design, two distinct metals and a center that fits snugly inside the ring with no gap or wobble.
