What is a 2023 Edward Jenner £2 worth?

This design was never released into circulation. The Royal Mint sold it in brilliant uncirculated packs and annual sets, so almost every example is a collector piece. One found in change is still legal tender at 2 pounds; out of its pack it brings a small premium at most, while a coin still sealed in its original packaging is what collectors want.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with crisp edge lettering
  • Original Royal Mint pack or presentation folder
  • A genuine mint error such as a misaligned or wrong edge, confirmed by an expert

Why the 2023 Edward Jenner £2 was made

Edward Jenner was a country doctor in Berkeley, Gloucestershire. In 1796 he tested the idea that infection with cowpox could protect people against smallpox, inoculating a boy named James Phipps and then showing he did not develop the disease. The word vaccine comes from the Latin for cow, a reminder of where the idea began. The method spread across the world and became the basis of vaccination; smallpox was eventually declared eradicated in 1980. Jenner died in 1823. This 2023 coin marks 200 years since his death. It belongs to the Royal Mint's Innovation in Science two-pound coins, following Alexander Graham Bell in 2022 and sharing its year with Ada Lovelace.

The Jenner £2 was not distributed to banks. The Royal Mint sold it only as a brilliant uncirculated coin and in the 2023 annual sets, so every example began with a collector. If it turns up in change, it came from a pack someone emptied and spent. It is still legal tender worth two pounds and any shop can accept it as such.

How to recognize it

Henry Gray, who also designed the Bell coin, shows a crowd of tiny human figures gathered around a large smallpox virus, suggesting the many people protected by Jenner's work. The virus sits at the center like a spiked ball, with the figures pressed around it toward the rim. The edge reads INNOVATION IN SCIENCE JENNER, following the pattern of the series. As a 2023 coin, its obverse shows King Charles III by Martin Jennings. The crowd around the virus and the JENNER edge make this coin straightforward to identify. A coin with this design but a different name on the edge is not genuine.

The other side carries Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III, first used in 2022.

2023 Edward Jenner £2 by the numbers

No circulation mintage exists for the 2023 Edward Jenner £2 because none were released to banks. The Royal Mint's other collector-only £2 coins dated 2023 were J. R. R. Tolkien, Flying Scotsman and Ada Lovelace.

No commemorative £2 dated 2023 was released for circulation, which is why so many people hunting change for new designs never see this one.

What to check on your 2023 Edward Jenner £2

  • Read the edge. It should say INNOVATION IN SCIENCE JENNER. A wrong or missing edge inscription is the quickest sign of a counterfeit.
  • Check the two metals: a silver-colored center and a gold-colored ring, with the ring tight and level all the way around.
  • Weigh it: a genuine two-metal £2 weighs 12.0 g. Fakes are often a little light and softer in detail.
  • Compare the portrait and lettering with a known genuine coin. Blurry letters, a flat portrait or uneven spacing point to a copy.

There's no circulation mintage, so a spent Jenner £2 is an uncommon find. People completing the Innovation in Science coins often need this one. Medical professionals and history readers buy it too. Pack-fresh coins draw a collector premium; worn ones a small premium. The tiny figures blur quickly with handling, so look at them closely to judge condition. A genuine coin has edge lettering that matches the design, ending with JENNER, two clearly different metals and a ring that holds the center tightly with no gap.
