What is a 2022 FA Cup £2 worth?

This design was never released into circulation. The Royal Mint sold it in brilliant uncirculated packs and annual sets, so almost every example is a collector piece. One found in change is still legal tender at 2 pounds; out of its pack it brings a small premium at most, while a coin still sealed in its original packaging is what collectors want.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with crisp edge lettering
  • Original Royal Mint pack or presentation folder
  • A genuine mint error such as a misaligned or wrong edge, confirmed by an expert

Why the 2022 FA Cup £2 was made

The FA Cup is the oldest national football competition in the world. Its first season was 1871 to 1872. The first final was played at the Kennington Oval in March 1872, when Wanderers beat Royal Engineers. The trophy itself has changed several times over the years; the original was stolen from a shop window in Birmingham in 1895 and never recovered. The competition is open to clubs far down the football pyramid, which is why the giant killing upsets of smaller sides are part of its appeal. Wembley has hosted most finals since 1923. The Royal Mint celebrated 150 years of the FA Cup with this two-pound coin in 2022.

The FA Cup £2 never went into circulation. The Royal Mint sold it as a brilliant uncirculated coin and in the 2022 annual sets, aimed at both coin and football collectors. So one picked up in change was bought new and then spent by someone who may not have realized. It's still a legal tender £2 and can be used for exactly two pounds.

How to recognize it

The reverse shows the FA Cup trophy, the version made in 2014, with CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF THE FA CUP inscribed around it. Matt Dent and Christian Davies designed it; Matt Dent is also known for the Royal Shield designs on the 2008 definitive coins. The trophy fills most of the center, so its shape is the first thing you notice. The edge reads FOOTBALL'S GREATEST CUP COMPETITION. The obverse shows the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. A trophy on a £2 with that inscription is unmistakably this coin, but check the edge too, as novelty football tokens are common.

The other side carries Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, introduced in 2015 and the last of her reign.

2022 FA Cup £2 by the numbers

No circulation mintage exists for the 2022 FA Cup £2 because none were released to banks. The Royal Mint's other collector-only £2 coins dated 2022 were Alexander Graham Bell, Dame Vera Lynn and 25 Years of the £2.

No commemorative £2 dated 2022 was released for circulation, which is why so many people hunting change for new designs never see this one.

What to check on your 2022 FA Cup £2

  • Read the edge. It should say FOOTBALL's GREATEST CUP COMPETITION. A wrong or missing edge inscription is the quickest sign of a counterfeit.
  • Check the two metals: a silver-colored center and a gold-colored ring, with the ring tight and level all the way around.
  • Weigh it: a genuine two-metal £2 weighs 12.0 g. Fakes are often a little light and softer in detail.
  • Compare the portrait and lettering with a known genuine coin. Blurry letters, a flat portrait or uneven spacing point to a copy.

There's no circulation mintage, so a spent FA Cup £2 is an unusual find in change. It appeals to football fans as much as to coin collectors, so demand is broad. A sharp pack coin draws a collector premium; a worn one generally a small premium. The trophy's handles and fine surface details soften with wear, which is a quick way to judge condition. On a real coin, the two metals are clearly different colors and the edge lettering is cleanly impressed into the rim.
