What the claim says
Viral pages say a Kennedy half dollar worth several million dollars might be in your pocket or a coin jar, often pointing to the 1964 date. Like most of these stories, they never explain what would make one coin worth so much more than the hundreds of millions of others struck with the same date.

What's true: silver gives some halves a premium
Congress authorized the Kennedy half dollar about a month after President Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963. Striking began in January 1964. The 1964 coins are 90 percent silver. When they were released in March 1964, people hoarded them as keepsakes. Many were later melted as silver rose.
From 1965 to 1970 the half dollar kept some silver, with outer layers of silver alloy over a core that brought the total to 40 percent. From 1971 on, the coin has been copper-nickel clad with no silver at all. So a 1964 half and a 1965 to 1970 half are worth more than face value because of their silver. That's a small premium driven by metal that moves with silver prices. It is real money, but it isn't millions.
The varieties collectors actually want
The 1970-D is the series key date for circulation-style coins: Denver struck it only for uncirculated mint sets, so it never went into general circulation. The 1964 Accented Hair proof shows heavy hair lines above Kennedy's ear on the first proofs struck; Jacqueline Kennedy reportedly asked for the hair to be softened, so the strong-hair version was used only briefly. The 1998-S matte finish half, made for a two-coin collector set, has a mintage of roughly 64,000, the lowest of the series.
There are also doubled dies, such as the 1974-D doubled die obverse. The usual mint errors turn up too. These earn a collector premium in good condition. All of them are worth checking for. None is a lottery ticket.
Half dollars stopped circulating widely long ago. From 2002 to 2020 the Mint made them only for collectors, which is part of why people assume any half dollar must be rare. Circulation production resumed in 2021.
How to sort your Kennedy halves
- Read the date first. 1964 means 90 percent silver. 1965 through 1970 means 40 percent silver. 1971 and later means no silver unless the coin came from a silver proof set with an S mint mark.
- Look at the edge. A 1964 has a solid silver-colored edge. A 1965 to 1970 coin shows a faint gray stripe. A clad coin from 1971 on shows a bright copper stripe.
- Weigh it to confirm. Expect about 12.5 grams for 1964, 11.5 grams for 1965 to 1970 and about 11.34 grams for clad halves.
- On a 1964 proof, look above Kennedy's ear for deep, distinct hair strands. On Accented Hair coins the I in LIBERTY is also missing most of its lower left serif.
- Check for a dual date of 1776 to 1976 and Independence Hall on the back. Those Bicentennial halves are common unless they have an S and came from a silver set.
Why the story spreads
The Kennedy half has a built-in emotional hook and a genuinely valuable first year. Many people have a few tucked away from 1964. That's the kernel of truth these pages stretch into a fantasy. CoinWeek's editor has described the broader genre as fabrications by SEO operations meant to lure readers toward ads.
To spot the next one, notice whether the article talks about silver weight, the Accented Hair features or the 1970-D mint sets. Real guides do. If it just shows a coin and a big number, it's an ad wearing a coin costume.
Frequently asked questions
Which Kennedy half dollars are silver?
1964 halves are 90 percent silver and 1965 to 1970 halves are 40 percent silver. Halves for circulation from 1971 on contain no silver.
Is a 1964 Kennedy half dollar rare?
No. Hundreds of millions were struck. It carries a silver premium. Only special examples such as Accented Hair proofs or top-grade coins earn more.
Why is the 1970-D half dollar special?
It was issued only in uncirculated mint sets, not released for circulation, which makes it the key date of the series.
Are Bicentennial half dollars valuable?
Clad ones from circulation are worth face value. Only the 40 percent silver S coins from collector sets carry a small premium.
