Quick answers
- Is the 2022-S Ely S. Parker Native American Dollar Proof rare?
- Not especially. The Mint made 399,950 for collectors. Most were kept in their original packaging.
- Is the 2022-S Ely S. Parker Native American Dollar Proof silver?
- No. It's manganese brass (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel). Circulating silver dollars ended with the 1935 Peace dollar. Some Eisenhower dollars with an S mint mark were made in 40% silver for collectors, but circulation Ike dollars are copper-nickel clad.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2022 Sacagawea Dollar?
- On the edge, incused with the date. On this coin the mark is S, for San Francisco.
- How many 2022-S Ely S. Parker Native American Dollar proofs were made?
- 399,950.
What to check on your 2022-S
- Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2022-P (980,000 made).
- Judge the grade under good light. Golden dollars tarnish easily, so bright original color matters. Check Sacagawea's cheek and the eagle's feathers for wear.
Proofs from 2022 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.
The story of the 2022-S Ely S. Parker
Code talkers to Ely Parker (2016 to 2022)
The later designs turned to individual people and modern service: the Code Talkers in 2016, Sequoyah in 2017, Jim Thorpe in 2018, Native Americans in space in 2019, Elizabeth Peratrovich in 2020, Native American military service in 2021 and Ely S. Parker in 2022. Each coin page here explains its own design.
Mintages in these years were small by circulating standards and most coins went to collectors or to banks that ordered them, so you will rarely see one in change. Look for coins straight from mint rolls: the golden surface marks and tarnishes easily and a clean, bright coin is what collectors look for.
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2022
The American Women quarters program began, alongside a new obverse portrait of Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser.
How to recognize it
The Ely S. Parker design
The 2022 reverse depicts Ely S. Parker in Army uniform, with a quill pen, a book and a likeness of his signature. Inscriptions read TONAWANDA SENECA and HA-SA-NO-AN-DA, his tribe and the name given to him at birth. Parker served as military secretary to Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. He wrote out the final copy of the surrender terms at Appomattox in 1865. Under President Grant he became the first Native American Commissioner of Indian Affairs.
The Sacagawea Dollar design
Glenna Goodacre's obverse shows Sacagawea looking over her shoulder while carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste. From 2000 to 2008 the reverse showed a soaring eagle by Thomas Rogers. From 2009 each year has a new reverse on a Native American theme and the date and mint mark moved to the edge. The golden color comes from a manganese brass outer layer.
