Quick answers

Is the 1969-D Roosevelt Dime rare?
No. 563 million were made, a typical run for the series. Condition and varieties decide its value, not the date.
Is the 1969-D Roosevelt Dime silver?
No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Dimes dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
Where is the mint mark on a 1969 Roosevelt Dime?
On the obverse, just above the date. "P" appears from 1980. On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
Which Denver dates near 1969 are scarcer?
The 1972-D at 330,290,000, the 1971-D at 377,914,240, the 1973-D at 455,032,426, plus 1 more. So the 1969-D is one of the easier dates of its stretch.
How many 1969-D Roosevelt Dime coins were made?
563,323,870.

What to check on your 1969-D

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 1969 (146 million made).
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Check the horizontal bands on the torch on the reverse. "Full Bands" (FB) coins, where the bands are complete and separated, carry big premiums. On the obverse look at Roosevelt's hair above the ear.

With 563 million made, the 1969-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 1969-D

Output at Denver climbed to 563,323,870 in 1969, from 481 million the year before. The next year it made 755 million (1970-D).

It was the big producer of the year, well ahead of 1969 (146 million).

Denver struck the Roosevelt Dime in 77 issues between 1946 and 2025. By mintage this one lands in the scarcer half, while the key for that mint is the 1955-D (13,959,000). Within the 1960s it's 12th smallest of 17, between the 1968-D (481 million) and the 1964 (929 million).

Mint marks move above the date (1968 to 1991)

In 1968 the mint mark moved to the obverse just above the date. San Francisco began striking proof dimes for collectors the same year. A few proof dies left the Mint without the S, creating the rare no-S proofs dated 1968, 1970, 1975 and 1983. The 1975 is one of the great modern rarities with only two examples known. Proof sets of 1979 and 1981 show two mint mark styles: a filled Type 1 S and a clearer Type 2 S that is scarcer.

Philadelphia added a P mint mark to the dime in 1980. Two years later a Philadelphia die missing its P reached circulation. The 1982 no-P dime became one of the most popular modern errors. Business strike mintages stayed in the hundreds of millions per mint and passed one billion at Philadelphia in 1988. Dimes from these years turn up in change constantly. Only well-struck uncirculated pieces, proof varieties and errors draw real collector interest.

Elsewhere in US coinage in 1969

A doubled die at San Francisco produced the 1969-S Doubled Die cent, one of the rarest Lincoln cent errors.

How to recognize it

Franklin Roosevelt faces left with LIBERTY in front of him, IN GOD WE TRUST below his chin and the date at the lower right. The designer's initials JS sit below the neck. The reverse shows a torch flanked by an olive branch and an oak branch, with E PLURIBUS UNUM across the field. The mint mark was to the left of the torch base until 1964 and has been above the date since 1968.
