What to check on your 1966

  • There's no mint mark on this one, so the date and condition are what matter.
  • There is no mint mark to look for. The Mint omitted mint marks from 1965 to 1967, so coins struck at Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco look identical.
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Check the horizontal bands on the torch on the reverse. "Full Bands" (FB) coins, where the bands are complete and separated, carry big premiums. On the obverse look at Roosevelt's hair above the ear.

With 1.4 billion made, the 1966 still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 1966

Philadelphia made 1,382,734,540 in 1966, down from 1.7 billion in 1965. The next year it made 2.2 billion (1967).

No other mint struck it for circulation that year, so every 1966 you find is from Philadelphia.

Philadelphia struck the Roosevelt Dime in 80 issues between 1946 and 2025. By mintage this one lands in the more common half, while the key for that mint is the 1955 (12,450,181). Within the 1960s it's 15th smallest of 17, between the 1964-D (1.4 billion) and the 1965 (1.7 billion).

The clad change without mint marks (1965 to 1967)

The Coinage Act of 1965 removed silver from the dime. New dimes have outer layers of 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel bonded to a pure copper core, which shows as a copper stripe on the edge. They weigh 2.27 grams against 2.5 grams for the silver version. To discourage hoarding of the new coins, the Mint left mint marks off every dime dated 1965 through 1967.

Mintages were enormous, with more than 2.2 billion dimes dated 1967 alone. Proof sets were suspended and Special Mint Sets with a satin finish took their place in all three years. The prized error of the period is a 1965 dime struck on a leftover 90 percent silver planchet. It weighs 2.5 grams and lacks the copper stripe on its edge, so a scale settles the question quickly. Ordinary dimes from these years rarely carry a premium unless they are uncirculated with full torch bands.

Elsewhere in US coinage in 1966

Mint marks were still omitted on circulating coins and Special Mint Sets continued in place of proof sets.

How to recognize it

Franklin Roosevelt faces left with LIBERTY in front of him, IN GOD WE TRUST below his chin and the date at the lower right. The designer's initials JS sit below the neck. The reverse shows a torch flanked by an olive branch and an oak branch, with E PLURIBUS UNUM across the field. The mint mark was to the left of the torch base until 1964 and has been above the date since 1968.
