What is a 2017-P Lincoln Shield Cent worth?

A worn 2017-P is a spender: face value. A bright uncirculated one, or one with a known error, is worth setting aside.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with full original luster
  • A die variety or minting error

Quick answers

Is the 2017-P Lincoln Shield Cent rare?
No. With 4.4 billion made, it's one of the most common Lincoln Shield Cents.
Where is the mint mark on a 2017 Lincoln Shield Cent?
On the obverse, below the date. Philadelphia cents have no mint mark, except the 2017-P (struck for the Mint's 225th anniversary). On this coin the mark is P, for Philadelphia.
Which Philadelphia dates near 2017 are scarcer?
The 2022 at 3,129,200,000, the 2012 at 3,132,000,000, the 2019 at 3,542,800,000, plus 5 more. So the 2017-P is one of the easier dates of its stretch.
How many 2017-P Lincoln Shield Cent coins were made?
4,361,220,000.

What to check on your 2017-P

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2017-D (4.3 billion made).
  • Look for the small P below the date. 2017 is the only year Philadelphia cents carry a mint mark.
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2017-S Lincoln Shield Cent Proof (926,763 made) is the one to compare with.
  • Bubbles, peeling or gray patches on a zinc cent are corrosion of the copper plating, not a minting error. They don't add value.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Modern zinc cents are judged on luster and eye appeal; spots, scratches and plating flaws lower value. Proofs are graded for cameo contrast (CAM / DCAM).

With 4.4 billion made, the 2017-P still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 2017-P

At 4,361,220,000, the 2017 run at Philadelphia was close to the 2016 figure. The next year it made 4.1 billion (2018).

2017-D came to 4.3 billion, so neither mint's 2017 coin is much scarcer than the other.

Philadelphia struck the Lincoln Shield Cent in 16 issues between 2010 and 2025. By mintage this one lands in the more common half, while the key for that mint is the 2025 (655,200,000). Within the 2010s it's 16th smallest of 20, between the 2017-D (4.3 billion) and the 2016-D (4.4 billion).

Peak production and the 2017-P (2014 to 2017)

Shield cent production reached its highest levels in 2015 and 2016, with about 9 billion coins each year from Philadelphia and Denver combined. The cent's cost to produce stayed above face value, which renewed debate in Congress over ending it, though no change was made during this era.

For the 225th anniversary of the Philadelphia Mint, every 2017 cent from Philadelphia carries a P mint mark below the date, the first time a circulating cent has shown it. That makes 2017-P a distinctive date that is still easy to find in change. Many people set them aside. Also in 2017, the San Francisco Mint struck an Enhanced Uncirculated cent for a special 225th anniversary set. Uncirculated coins from these years are plentiful, though fully red examples without spots or plating flaws are prized.

Elsewhere in US coinage in 2017

Philadelphia cents carried a "P" mint mark for the first time, marking the 225th anniversary of the US Mint.

How to recognize it

The reverse shows a union shield with a scroll reading ONE CENT across it, with E PLURIBUS UNUM above and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the top. The shield stands for Lincoln's work to preserve the Union. The obverse keeps the Lincoln portrait, with the date and any mint mark to the right.
