- Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.
Proofs from 2009 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.
The story of the 2009-S Northern Mariana Islands
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2009
Four special reverse designs marked the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth on the cent. Quarters honored the District of Columbia and five US territories. The Native American dollar began a new reverse each year.
How to recognize it
The Northern Mariana Islands design
A large limestone latte stone stands near the shore with a Carolinian canoe and two white fairy terns flying overhead. A Carolinian head lei, or mwar, of local flowers runs along the bottom as a symbol of honor and respect. Together the elements represent the land, sea and air of the islands. The latte recalls the Chamorro people, while the canoe honors Carolinian seafaring. This was the sixth and final quarter of the 2009 series.
The D.C. and U.S. Territories Quarter design
Six reverse designs in 2009 honored the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. Like the State quarters, the reverse names the jurisdiction and the obverse carries Washington's portrait with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR.
