What to check on your 2014-D

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2014-P (214 million made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2014-S Arches Quarter Proof (828,186 made) is the one to compare with.
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.

With 251 million made, the 2014-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 2014-D Arches

Denver made 251,400,000 of the Arches coin. That was the biggest Denver run of the 5 designs issued in 2014; Great Smoky Mountains had the smallest at 99 million.

Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (214 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.

Across the whole program it sits 47th of 56 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Acadia at 22 million.

How to recognize it

The Arches design

Utah's Arches National Park, third in the 2014 lineup, is represented by Delicate Arch standing alone with the La Sal Mountains in the distance. The park contains more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches shaped by erosion over millions of years. Delicate Arch, a freestanding span on a slickrock bowl, is the most recognized of them. Arches was proclaimed a national monument in 1929 and became a national park in 1971. Donna Weaver designed the reverse, which Charles Vickers sculpted.

The America the Beautiful Quarter design

Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
