Why the 2000 Path of Knowledge Toonie was made
The Royal Canadian Mint spent 1999 and 2000 marking the new millennium, most visibly with two years of special quarters. The toonie got its own millennium design in 2000 under the title Path of Knowledge. Rather than an event or a person, it honored an idea: that knowledge and wisdom pass from one generation to the next and carry a society forward. It was a fitting theme for a coin meant to mark the start of a new century, looking both back at what had been learned and ahead to the people who would inherit it.
It also became the biggest commemorative toonie run of all. Close to 30 million went into change, more than the Nunavut coin a year earlier and far more than any special toonie since. The coin broke a couple of the toonie's own habits too. The value moved to the obverse beside the Queen and the date moved to the reverse, the opposite of the usual arrangement. Because it was struck in such numbers and has stayed in circulation for decades, this is one of the special designs Canadians are most likely to come across without even looking.
How to recognize it
Tony Bianco's reverse shows three polar bears, an adult with two young bears, a family scene that carries the theme of one generation guiding the next. The single most useful identification point is the date: 2000 appears on the reverse, which is unusual for a toonie. Turn the coin over and you will find the denomination on the obverse with Queen Elizabeth II in the Dora de Pédery-Hunt portrait. On a normal toonie it is the other way round, with the value on the reverse and the date on the obverse. So if your coin shows three bears, a date on the bear side and the value on the Queen's side, you have Path of Knowledge. Count the bears too, since the regular design has only one.
2000 Path of Knowledge Toonie by the numbers
By the numbers, the 2000 Path of Knowledge Toonie is the most common of 13 circulating toonies with a published mintage. The next scarcer is the 1999 Nunavut Toonie (25.1 million).
It was the only circulating commemorative toonie dated 2000.
What to check on your 2000 Path of Knowledge Toonie
- Confirm the design: the Path of Knowledge reverse dated 2000, in a silver-colored ring with a gold-colored center.
- Check whether it has added color. Colored toonies came from collector products or special circulation releases; keep them out of rough handling.
- Look at the join between ring and core. It should be tight and even; a loose or damaged core is damage, not a rarity.
- Specimen and proof toonies from Mint sets have satin or mirror finishes that circulation coins never have.
At 29,880,000 for circulation, Path of Knowledge has the highest mintage of any commemorative toonie, so a circulated coin is a face value coin. Its unusual layout regularly convinces people they have found an error. They haven't: the swapped date and value appear on every coin of this design and were planned that way. What does matter is condition. An example with sharp fur detail on all three bears, full luster and a clean ring can earn a small premium from people assembling the series. Worn coins, scratched cores and dented rims are simply change.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the date on the wrong side of the 2000 toonie?
It was designed that way. For the millennium Path of Knowledge coin, the Mint put the date on the reverse with the three bears and moved the value to the obverse. Every coin of the design is like this, so it is not an error.
How many 2000 Path of Knowledge toonies were made?
The Mint struck 29,880,000 for circulation, the largest run of any commemorative toonie. That huge number means circulated examples are common and stay at face value, while bright uncirculated coins draw only a small premium.
