Why the 2024 L. M. Montgomery Loonie was made

Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on Prince Edward Island in 1874. Her first novel, Anne of Green Gables, appeared in 1908 and made her one of the most widely read authors Canada has produced. She wrote many more books, most set on the island she knew so well and Anne has since been adapted for stage, film and television around the world. Her work still draws visitors to Prince Edward Island today. She was born in Clifton, now New London and raised largely by her grandparents in Cavendish.

For the 150th anniversary of her birth the Royal Canadian Mint issued a loonie in 2024 and released it into circulation. No circulation mintage figure was published, so the coin cannot be compared with earlier issues by number. It sits in the line of recent loonies honoring individual Canadians, following the Elsie MacGill coin and it is a natural pick for readers who grew up with Anne. It is also one of the few loonies with a direct link to a single Canadian province's landscape.

How to recognize it

Brenda Jones's reverse shows a portrait of Montgomery beside Anne of Green Gables, with an open portfolio and an inkwell that point to her writing. The background shows the landscape of Prince Edward Island, the setting of many of her stories. On select coins that landscape is colored. To confirm the issue, look for the two figures, the inkwell and the date 2024. Comparing a plain coin with a colored one makes the island scene behind them much easier to read. The inkwell and portfolio are small, so check them under a magnifier. Unlike most recent loonies, this one puts a fictional character beside a real person.

The Royal Canadian Mint has not published a circulation figure for the 2024 L. M. Montgomery Loonie in our source, so it cannot be ranked against other loonies yet.

What to check on your 2024 L. M. Montgomery Loonie

  • Confirm the design and date: the L. M. Montgomery reverse dated 2024. The 11-sided shape and gold color make a loonie easy to tell from other coins.
  • Check whether it has added color. Colored versions come from collector packs, not from change. Keep them in their packaging.
  • Look for even plating. Worn spots that show a different metal underneath are normal wear, not an error.
  • Specimen and proof loonies from Mint sets have mirror or satin finishes that circulation coins never have.

No circulation mintage was published, so there is no official figure to measure this coin against. Worn pieces pulled from change sit at face value. Check whether yours has the colored landscape, since both versions exist and color rubs off easily with handling. A colored coin with an intact background is the version to keep. Uncirculated examples with sharp portraits can bring a small premium. Sealed or carded examples were collector products, not circulation finds, so leave them in their packaging to protect the color.
