Why the 2020 ICC Women's T20 World Cup $2 was made
Australia hosted the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in early 2020. The final was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on International Women's Day, 8 March 2020. Australia beat India in front of one of the biggest crowds ever recorded for a women's sporting event. Australia went into the tournament as defending champions, having won the 2018 edition in the West Indies. The Royal Australian Mint marked the tournament with a colored $2 coin.
The coin was released through a supermarket promotion with a collector album to hold it and the tournament organizers announced two million coins for circulation. The tournament finished just as the pandemic was about to shut down sport around the world, which gave the final a special place in Australian sporting memory. For many people this coin is a reminder of the last big crowd event before everything changed. Beth Mooney and Alyssa Healy both made half centuries in the final. The win gave Australia its fifth T20 World Cup title in the women's game. The final crowd was a record for a women's cricket match.
How to recognize it
The reverse carries a cricket themed design colored in yellow, blue and purple, replacing the Aboriginal elder. Those three colors together make it easy to separate from other 2020 colored coins such as the orange Firefighters $2 or the green and yellow Tokyo Paralympic coin. The obverse carries Jody Clark's portrait of Elizabeth II, with JC beneath the neck and the date 2020. Specifications are standard for the denomination: 20.5 mm across, 6.6 g, aluminum bronze, with an interrupted milled edge. The colors also set it apart from the cherry blossom Tokyo coins of the same year, each of which uses a single color.

What to check on your 2020 ICC Women's T20 World Cup $2
- Confirm the design: ICC Women's T20 World Cup dated 2020, with the colored panel (Yellow/Blue/Purple).
- Never clean a colored coin. Rubbing or solvents strip the color, which is most of what collectors are paying for.
- Check the edge: Australian $2 coins have interrupted milling, with sections of reeding separated by smooth gaps.
- Weigh it if you are unsure: a genuine $2 coin weighs 6.6 g and is 20.5 mm across.
With about two million announced for circulation, it sits in the middle of the colored $2 range and it was distributed widely, so it turns up in change. Circulated coins with worn color usually trade near face value. Cricket fans and collectors of women's sport memorabilia sometimes want it more than general coin collectors do, especially in clean condition in its original card, which can bring a small premium. Don't clean it: the purple and blue are easily damaged by rubbing. A flip or capsule is the right home for it.
