Why the 2018 Invictus Games $2 was made
The Invictus Games were founded by Prince Harry in 2014 as an international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans. Sydney hosted the fourth Games in October 2018, after London, Orlando and Toronto. The name comes from Invictus, a poem by William Ernest Henley and is Latin for unconquered. The Royal Australian Mint issued a $2 coin to mark the occasion.
Unlike most $2 commemoratives of the period, this one has no added color. The design was struck in the coin's own metal, so it can blend into a handful of change far more easily than its brightly colored relatives. No mintage total has been published. That combination of no color and no published figure means the coin gets less attention than it deserves and many people pass one on without noticing it isn't a regular $2. Along with the plain 2012 poppy and the 2016 decimal anniversary coin, it is one of the few commemorative $2 coins of the period issued without any color. How to recognize it
The reverse carries an Invictus Games design in place of the Aboriginal elder, with no color at all. That makes it easy to miss: check the reverse of every 2018 $2 coin for something other than the elder and the Southern Cross. The obverse shows Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Elizabeth II, with IRB under the neck and the date 2018. Size and weight are the standard 20.5 mm and 6.6 g, in aluminum bronze with an interrupted milled edge. Because there's no color to wear away, condition is judged on the sharpness of the design and the luster of the metal.
2018 Invictus Games $2 by the numbers
The Royal Australian Mint has not published a circulation figure for the 2018 Invictus Games $2 in our source, so it cannot be ranked against other $2 coins yet.
It was released in 2018 alongside 4 other circulating $2 coin designs: the Armistice Centenary (1.7 million), the Eternal Flame (3.4 million) and the 2018 Australian $2 (14.6 million).
What to check on your 2018 Invictus Games $2
- Confirm the design: Invictus Games dated 2018.
- Check the edge: Australian $2 coins have interrupted milling, with sections of reeding separated by smooth gaps.
- Weigh it if you are unsure: a genuine $2 coin weighs 6.6 g and is 20.5 mm across.
With no published mintage, it's hard to place the Invictus coin precisely and circulated examples generally trade close to face value. The lack of color means it holds up better in circulation than colored coins, but it also picks up scratches in the open fields. Uncirculated examples with full luster are the nicest to own and may bring a small premium. Collectors of military themed coins often add it to their remembrance set. As with any coin, avoid cleaning, which leaves fine hairlines.
